Parisodhana: Research for and from India

We research and report about the grassroots reality surrounding disability and sporting rights in India

There is a paucity of evidence-based research about adapted sports from India. With growing interest in sports for people with disabilities in India, there is a critical need to promote adapted sports research. Research that will inform the citizens and government on matters related to disability rights of citizens inside India’s fast growing sport ecosystem.

Since 2011, India has continued to use outdated data about its citizens with disabilities. The Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities established the mandate about statistics and data pertaining to people with disabilities. Despite India’s commitment to the UN Convention beginning 2007, the country is yet to have updated numbers. There is an increase in prize money and media visibility for Paralympians since the Rio Paralympic Games in 2016. Beyond the Paralympics, there is scant discourse and discussions about other adapted sports. India is still unaware of the science behind training persons with disabilities using evidence-based practices.

Through Parisodhana, we encourage research initiatives and projects which introduce professionals to the world of disability rights and related topics. By improving access to research tools that increase India’s footprint internationally, we are raising awareness about the developing adapted sports movement in India.

By 2030, we aim to increase the publication of disability rights and adapted sports research articles along with position statements from India.
